Market Theme was a revolutionary Wordpress e-commerce system that launched in February 2008. Initially the project began as just a simple theme for listing items for sale. Eventually I decided to integrate it with e-junkie buy now and cart processing. While this made a bit easier for the store owner, it still was on a fairly basic level.
As beginning theme sales grew and feedback came in, the development of Market sped up greatly and hit its peak with the release of Market 3 in May 2008. With the help of John Kolbert, a much more advanced admin panel for the theme was put together which made adding and editing products much easier for those who had never used Wordpress before or had limited computer knowledge. That was very important because The Market Theme was a favorite among artists and small craft creators who wanted the easiest solution they could find. A completely custom shopping cart was also added which meant that the theme no longer depended on a third party service for anything other than final payment (Paypal). This made Market an extremely appealing all-in-one self hosted storefront solution.
With college starting and bills to pay I made the tough decision of selling the Market Theme project in September 2008. During my time behind the wheel (February – September) roughly 300 Market Theme licenses were purchased. The project was featured throughout the web as an amazing premium theme value that pushed the limits of what Wordpress was capable of doing. I was applauded by quite a few customers for constantly thinking outside the box for more non-traditional means of utilizing the open-source blogging system.
Refresh:
In September 2009 I was hired to redesign the Market Theme portal and the theme itself, bringing the version up to 4.0. The goal of the theme redesign itself was to polish up the storefront view of Market and align it much more with the common layout design of many online stores. The project was successful on both fronts, and the new Markettheme.com and version 4 of theme are set to release in early 2010.
